Two workers hospitalised after dog attack at Son Reus municipal kennel

Two workers at Palma’s Son Reus municipal kennel were rushed to hospital on Saturday morning after a dog attack that unfolded just before dawn.

At around 6:45 a.m., a staff member from the private contractor Athisa was beginning the daily feeding round when she entered a cage and was suddenly mauled by a mixed-breed Dogo Argentino. The animal clamped onto her right arm, causing serious injuries.

Her screams triggered an immediate response. A security guard and another kennel worker sprinted to help but were also attacked. The guard suffered “severe bites” to his arm; the second worker escaped with minor injuries.

It took the combined effort of all on-duty staff to finally subdue and sedate the dog, allowing first aid to be administered before the injured workers were transported to hospital.

The UGT union has condemned what it calls a “serious deterioration” in safety conditions at the facility, claiming staff have been warning for months about the lack of proper protocols and insufficient personnel. They link the situation to the June 2025 privatisation of the service, which shifted management from the public company Emaya to Athisa.

Palma City Council, however, described the incident as an “unfortunate accident” and insists staffing levels have in fact doubled under the new operator, which now includes — also for the first time — two veterinary assistants.
