Thick fog blankets Mallorca for a second day as yellow alert triggers road warnings

Mallorca woke up in a cloud on Monday, as thick fog swept across the island for the second morning in a row, turning familiar landscapes into ghostly silhouettes and catching both residents and tourists off guard.

The unusual weather pattern began early Sunday and returned before dawn on Monday, a public holiday for the Immaculate Conception. Large swathes of the island found themselves under dense fog, with Aemet warning of lingering mist and fog banks through the morning and again overnight.

The weather agency issued a yellow alert for fog across southern and inland Mallorca, forecasting visibility of just 400 metres between midnight and 9 a.m. on Monday. Despite the murky conditions, Aena reported business as usual at Palma Airport, with no delays attributed to the fog on Sunday.

Temperatures, meanwhile, refused to budge — hovering between 18ºC and 23ºC, still well above average for this time of year.

With visibility dropping on key roads, the Baleares Emergency Service (112) activated its own yellow alert under the Meteobal plan and urged drivers to take extra care. Officials reminded motorists to switch on both front and rear fog lights, slow down, keep a safe distance, avoid full beams, stay in their lane, and skip overtaking until conditions improve.
