Save the date: Saturday, 22 November · 7:00 p.m. · Plaça d’Espanya
Palma is getting ready to flip the switch on Christmas — and this year, the city is doing it in a whole new setting. For the first time, the traditional lights-on celebration will move to the freshly revamped Plaça d’Espanya, a change prompted by last year’s overwhelming crowds in Plaça de la Reina and the Born, where more than 20,000 people squeezed in for a glimpse of the show.
The big moment comes this Saturday, 22 November, at 7:00 p.m., right in front of the statue of Jaume I. City officials are preparing for another massive turnout and haven’t ruled out closing traffic along the Avingudes if the crowds start to swell.
This year’s spectacle, produced by Grup Trui, promises a burst of fantasy under the title El ball de les dues estrelles (“Dance of the Two Stars”). Over 35 minutes, audiences will follow the celestial reunion of Lira and Vega, two sister stars drawn back together by a symbolic diamond. This is set to be a full theatrical experience: a central platform, giant LED screen, drifting snow and billowing smoke, precise light choreography, acrobats soaring above the square, and the showstopper — the Candelabre Galàctic, a floating installation designed to descend from the sky for the grand finale. In total, 13 performers and a sizeable technical crew will bring the story to life, backed by a budget of €78,650.
Once the tale of the two stars reaches its shimmering climax, the crowd will join in a countdown to the moment everyone’s waiting for: the simultaneous illumination of Palma’s Christmas lights. This year’s display is bigger than ever, stretching across some 200 locations with 3,350 light modules — 80 more than last year — and more than 614,000 metres of garlands, an increase of nearly 73,000 metres.
Altogether, the city is investing €1.9 million to ensure Palma shines brighter than ever this festive season.
