More than thirty tiny turtles return to the sea at Can Pere Antoni

The Balearic Government releases 34 loggerhead hatchlings whose nest was discovered on the same Palma beach in July.

On Tuesday afternoon, around fifty people gathered on Can Pere Antoni beach to witness a remarkable moment: the release of 34 Caretta caretta turtles, whose nest was found on this same stretch of sand in July. Families, volunteers, and environmental workers watched in silence until the first hatchling disappeared beneath the waves — and then burst into applause.

The nest had contained 77 eggs. Of these, 67 were left to incubate naturally on the beach, while 10 were transferred to incubators to ensure their viability. The eggs hatched on September 6 and 7, producing 73 healthy hatchlings — an exceptional result.

From these, 39 turtles have joined the 2025–2026 “Head Starting” programme, led by the Balearic wildlife recovery consortium COFIB. Over the coming year, they will be reared in controlled conditions in marine research centres across Spain — including the Palma Aquarium Foundation, the Cabrera National Park Visitors’ Centre, and aquariums in Catalonia, Seville, and Gijón — to increase their chances of survival and expand scientific knowledge about the species.

The remaining 34 turtles, now able to fend for themselves, were released into the sea on Tuesday. The event brought together representatives of regional and local institutions, research centres, conservation groups, and members of the public.

The Caretta caretta (loggerhead turtle) is considered a vulnerable species in the Mediterranean, threatened by accidental fishing, climate change, and the loss of nesting habitats. Since 2019, the “Head Starting” initiative has helped improve their survival rates by rearing a portion of each nest’s hatchlings for 10 to 12 months before returning them to the sea.
