Historic school of art drops photography course after enrolment collapse

The centuries-old institution will rethink how photography is taught as part of a wider restructuring of arts education in the Balearics.

The School of Art and Design of the Balearic Islands has discontinued its higher-level Photography course this academic year, after several years of declining enrolment. Only two students remain in their second year, and no new cohort enrolled for 2024/2025.

The institution traces its origins to 1778, when it was founded in Palma as the city’s Drawing School. Today, it operates under the name Escola d’Art i Superior de Disseny de les Illes Balears (EASDIB) and is one of the oldest art schools in Spain.

Over the past five years, the Photography programme has lost around twenty students. Miquel Oliver, Director of the School’s Design Studies, links this to broader changes in the profession. “Nowadays, anyone can take a picture with a mobile phone or create one using artificial intelligence,” he said. The regional education department is now considering offering photography through shorter workshops or professional accreditation courses rather than a full two-year programme.

The situation comes as the Balearic Government prepares to restructure higher artistic studies. Higher-degree programmes in Design, Music, Dance and Drama are expected to be grouped on a new public arts campus next to the Conservatoire. In contrast, the applied arts and craft programmes — including Jewellery, Comics and Illustration — will remain in the current School of Art building.

Joan Lluís Miró, Director of the School of Art (Applied Arts and Crafts), said the institution will use the moment to refresh its offering. He hopes to develop new courses and artisan workshops to reinforce the School’s historic role in practical and craft-based artistic training.
