The boy named Donald Trump: Mallorca’s most unforgettable young footballer

He shares a name with a billionaire, but this Donald Trump’s dream is measured in goals, not polls.

In August 2017, in the maternity ward of Palma’s Son Espases Hospital, a baby was born with a name no one would forget: Donald Trump Ehimegbe Odion.

Eight years later, that name now echoes across the pitches of Son Bibiloni, where young Donald — all bright eyes and boundless energy — has just joined the under-10s squad of RCD Mallorca. He plays midfield, darting across the grass with the single-minded joy of a boy who dreams of one day reaching the big leagues.

His parents, Charles and Faith, came to Mallorca from Nigeria in search of a better life. They now live with Donald and his little sister, Diamond, in a small flat in Camp d’en Serralta — a working-class neighbourhood with laundry-draped balconies and kids playing football in the square until dusk.

People always ask about the name. Little Donald just shrugs. “I’m used to it,” he says with a shy smile. His father explains: “I admire the man and the politician. He’s strong. Trump means triumph — and I want that for my son.”

Whether you agree with the sentiment or not, Charles’ choice says something universal: the desire to give a child a name that carries strength, hope, and maybe even a bit of protection.

From Son Cotoner to Son Bibiloni: the long road to a dream

Donald started out at Sporting Ciutat de Palma, a small neighbourhood club in Son Cotoner. Getting to training was never easy — the family doesn’t have a car, so every trip means juggling buses and schedules — but Donald never missed a session. His dedication caught the eye of scouts from Real Mallorca, and this season he’s finally wearing the red shirt.

“He’s a lovely boy and we’re grateful Mallorca gave him the chance,” says Juanito Ordoñez, coordinator at his old club. “Behind every player there’s a story — and his is one you don’t forget.”

In Mallorca’s multicultural mix, Donald’s story is also that of a new generation: children of immigrants growing up Balearic, speaking Catalan and Spanish with ease, and chasing their dreams with the same passion as any local-born kid.

A name, a dream, and a ball at his feet

For now, life is simple: school in the morning, football in the afternoon, homework squeezed in between. His parents cheer from the sidelines when they can, proud of every goal and every hard-won moment on the pitch.

And while his name may turn heads, out there he’s just Donald — another kid with muddy knees, a bright future, and the kind of dream that makes every early-morning bus ride worth it.
