Where were you when 2000 dawned and the beginning of a new millennium? I was on Kite Hill of top of Parliament Hill Fields, in North London.   The view over London was supposed to give a great view of fireworks and celebrations.  Many people were doing the same and we all had our champagne ready for the moment it all began. 

This was the year of the arrival of my first granddaughter. The beginning of my husband’s health challenges. The year Mallorca began to mean more than a holiday destination.  The year of selling my London based business and changing direction. Yes, 2000 was a big year in our family. 

I became a Human of Mallorca in that year.  An apartment on the beach in the Port of Soller and a new chapter in our family’s experience.  This led to a three generational move and a house in L’horta for Trev and me, and in Soller for my daughter, son in law and family.  The year 2000 set the scene for all that, and we have been here ever since. 

So twenty-five years in Mallorca have been full of life’s rich experiences.   Two more wonderful granddaughters and complete career changes for their parents. The challenges of young family life for them in a country where life was done differently.  A huge learning curve fortunately blest with other families, who arrived at the same time, learning alongside.  The bond of that group is that of a true extended family.  They might not have the same blood, but they are ‘family’.  

Location decisions for the relocation were far more important than we realised at the time.  The Calvia area was dominated by English speakers and proximity to International English-speaking schools.  The Soller Valley, which we chose, was a different world.  Commuting to the English schools was a possibility but it was rare to have English speaking neighbours.  We had landed in ‘an island within an island’ in Soller.  This was an altogether different experience which taught us all so much. 

For those looking to be Humans of Mallorca in 2025 the process is trickier, as Brexit paperwork has seen to that. The powers that be talk of making it easier for young people to come and work the summer in Mallorca.  Spain welcomes incomers with skills and all systems are in place for you to be here.  The different Visas have to be applied for, and all rules adhered to, but it is all possible. 

For those of us who have the ‘25-year badge’ some are returning ‘home’ as they age or feel the pull of grandchildren.  Others have made the full transition and lived longer in this place than any other they have lived.  They feel Mallorca is their ‘home’.  They are proud to be Humans of Mallorca and commend the whole experience to you.
