Some careers begin with a calling. Others begin by chance — and then refuse to let go. That’s how Joan Mut entered the world of wine: a simple trial shift at a Mallorcan winery that revealed a profession he didn’t know he was looking for.
That unexpected spark eventually led him to Redivins, the company founded in 1987 by Jacques Noris, a pioneer who became Mallorca’s first major importer of French wine and a key representative for Spain’s most prestigious wineries. Jacques built Redivins into the go-to supplier for the island’s best hotels and restaurants, driven by a desire to share the knowledge and passion he spent a lifetime cultivating.
In 2017, Joan took the baton — and gave the legacy his own shape. Today he continues the mission of bringing exceptional wines and champagnes to Mallorca, curating some of the island’s most discerning wine lists and making sure Mallorcan producers have their place among the greats, while steering Redivins toward its vision of leading high-end hospitality.
Where were you born and what shaped you growing up?
I was born and bred in Palma. As a child I had no idea what I wanted to be, but I did know I wanted to be my own boss. I come from a very close family — my parents, Antonia from Inca and Joan from Llucmajor, gave me many things I’m grateful for, and our family bond is one of the best.
Where do you live now, and what does this place give you?
I live in Port Sóller. I love the mix of mountains and sea — it gives me the balance I need.
How did wine become your profession?
It wasn’t something I planned. I was offered a trial shift at a Mallorcan winery, and I fell in love with the profession. That experience eventually led me to Redivins, founded in 1987 by Jacques Noris. We’re known for our expertise in French wine and for working with some of the most important wineries in Mallorca and Spain.
What makes Redivins special, and what do you enjoy most about the work?
Our mission is to spread wine culture, not only through sales but through consulting and training for our clients’ teams. I enjoy the variety of people I meet — from winemakers to the CEOs of international companies.
What does a typical day look like?
Most days begin and end with my daughters, which I consider a blessing. Work involves driving across the island to meet clients, staying involved in new projects, and constantly searching for products that fit our philosophy.
What were your early professional challenges and successes?
One of my first successes was managing to sell Mallorcan wine at a time when restaurants didn’t include it on their lists. The difficulty then was the lack of market knowledge about the quality of local wines.
What challenges have you faced along the way?
Any tie there were big personal or professional changes. I learned that those hardest moments are the most important and enriching. Family and true friends helped me through; those are the times when people either appear or disappear, and the ones who stay are the ones who matter. Over time, I’ve learned to even appreciate the most difficult moments.
What are you most proud of?
My relationship with my marvellous daughters, Alba and Abril.
What is your view on the protests against mass tourism?
We shouldn’t forget that tourism is our main industry, and we shouldn’t mix something so important with politics.
You love travel — what are your highlights and dreams?
Travel has always been one of my passions. I love destinations with contrast. A recommended trip is Japan; a pending trip is Alaska.
What are your plans for this year, and your main life goal?
To spend more time with the people I love. And to help my daughters become good people.
How do you hope Mallorca will look in 2040?
Ideally, tourism will evolve towards a more sustainable, higher-quality model.
