Es Jonquet: Palma’s lost village. What locals miss in one of the city’s oldest neighbourhoods

Es Jonquet is among Palma’s most historic districts, born in the Middle Ages as a community of fishermen and millers. Perched on an outcrop with sweeping views of the bay, it became home to windmills from the 17th century onward — six still stand, including Molí d’en Garleta and Molí d’en Gelós, silent witnesses to the past.

Covering barely 0.1 km² and home to around 400 residents, Es Jonquet was once a village within the city. Locals recall when everyone knew each other by name, when the squares were filled with children and laughter and the bars served simple, home-cooked meals. From their terraces they looked out to open sea views, and the mills were still working structures, not just postcard silhouettes.

What they miss most is that esperit de barri — a community spirit where neighbourliness mattered more than commerce. Today, many feel that soul slipping away, replaced by English signs and glossy storefronts: luxury real estate agencies, cocktail bars, barbershops, wine bars, vintage eyewear boutiques.

For longtime residents, Es Jonquet is no longer the village they knew, but a stage set for visitors. And yet, in the creak of the old mills and the quiet corners of the square, echoes of that lost Palma still remain.
