Pianist David Gómez: “It’s not the island that needs to change, but us humans”

David Gómez, an internationally renowned pianist and composer, has performed in 69 countries, yet his heart remains in Mallorca, where he lives in a secluded forest retreat. In this conversation with ‘Humans of Mallorca’, he shares his musical journey, his love for nature, and his thoughts on life, success, and creativity.

Where were you born, and what was your early life like?

I was born in Wattwil, Switzerland, a lovely village near St. Gallen. My parents, Antonio, a gardener, and Adriana, a homemaker, emigrated there when they were just 16 years old. Life was not easy for them, but they taught me the most important values: honesty, hard work, and humility.

As a child, I always wanted to be an artist. My mother said I spent my days singing, dancing, and painting. If I hadn’t been a pianist, I would have loved to be an actor.

How did you begin your journey in music?

It’s all my mother’s fault — she plays the accordion as an amateur! We bought a piano, and that’s how it all started. I studied at the Conservatory of Palma de Mallorca and later continued my studies with Emili Muriscot, Claude Desmeules in Geneva, and Michael Davidson in Rotterdam.

What is it like to live in Mallorca?

I live at Finca Ca’s Pianista in Sineu, where I give concerts every summer. I live in the middle of the forest, which is a privilege. Mallorca is a paradise.

What is the most fulfilling part of your profession?

It’s a way of life, not a job. Music is incredibly powerful. I often wonder how people live without creating music. I feel very fortunate.

Who are your listeners?

Everyone, I hope! Young people, middle-aged, and older audiences — good music is timeless. That’s why we should always create from the heart, not follow the latest trends.

You’ve performed all over the world. What makes playing in Mallorca special?

Although I’ve played in 69 countries, performing in Mallorca is always unique. I’ve played in some extraordinary places, including the lighthouse in Port Andratx, the gardens of the Cartuja de Valldemossa, and even Palma’s Cemetery. Now, I hold concerts in the forest at Finca Ca’s Pianista for an audience of 120.

How do you spend a typical day?

I wake up early and read for about 45 minutes. Mornings are for working on concert proposals, composing, and recording. I cook for myself — no choice, as I live alone! In the evenings, I often go to the cinema alone, which I love. Being in a huge theater with a massive screen, just me and my popcorn is a luxury.

What challenges have you faced in your career?

There are always difficulties. As my dear producer Joe Dworniak says, “Enjoy the journey.” One of my biggest challenges has been legal battles over my stage design for 1 Piano y 200 Velas (1 Piano and 200 Candles). Several companies have copied it, violating intellectual property rights. The matter is currently in court.

What are you most proud of?

My family. My parents, siblings, and niece — they are what truly matter. Everything else is just a side dish, like French fries with a good steak. You understand me, right?

How do you see Mallorca in the future?

Mallorca will remain beautiful. It’s not the island that needs to change, but us humans.

What’s next for you?

I’m currently working on my tenth album, Portrait. My goal? To stay healthy enough to keep making music. And if one day I win an Oscar for Best Soundtrack, that would be fantastic — but I hope it’s not too late in life because I don’t want to miss the after-party!
