Forget cost-of-living calculators or glossy relocation guides. There’s a simpler, older way to measure quality of life: look for Hedera helix, common ivy.
Where ivy grows, life tends to feel civilised. Wine tastes better, books are easier to finish, and even neighbours seem more forgiving. Where ivy doesn’t grow, you may still manage, but it will feel like subsistence rather than life — Wi-Fi instead of conversation, groceries on delivery rather than markets, screens instead of shaded courtyards. You may still get by, but it will be survival rather than civilisation.
The Romans, without climate charts or lifestyle indexes, understood this instinctively. Their empire expanded not only where conquest was possible, but where comfort was likely. Where Hedera helix thrived — around the Mediterranean — Roman roads and villas followed. Where it failed — in deep northern forests or barren deserts — the roads stopped. Rome, it turned out, had the same taste in climate as ivy.
That taste has barely changed. In Mallorca today, ivy flourishes in shaded patios and along old stone walls, climbing 20 metres or more and thickening into stems as wide as a wrist. It cools buildings in summer, knits soil together on steep terraces, and shelters birds and insects through the year. Its late-season flowers, from September to November, feed pollinators when little else is in bloom — another quiet service to the good life.
Of course, there’s a caveat. Left unchecked in the countryside, ivy can smother olive trees and outcompete native plants, which is why some landowners see it as an invader. Civilisation, like ivy, always needs pruning.
Still, the old rule holds. Thinking of moving to Mallorca, Tuscany, or Provence? Look at the walls. If they’re dressed in ivy, chances are you’ll not only survive but thrive. Survival is possible almost everywhere. But living — that still requires ivy.
