It’s safe to say that bars in Santa Catalina are pretty much ten a penny. There’s possibly more bars than hipsters, and that’s saying something. I strolled past Agabar almost daily for an entire year, but for one reason or another, it took me an age to finally go. Fast forward to a celebration, and being in need of somewhere to fun to toast a birthday boy, I headed to Agabar on a cold Saturday night in December. Reader, it was rammed. Agabar is clearly not reliant on tourist trade. It’s a place where locals head in their droves, all in search of an perfect pisco sour, or a marvellous margarita. First impressions count and the immediate feeling was one of friendliness, where the atmosphere was laid back. But rest assured, you definitely feel as though you are ‘someone in the know’ upon entering this perfect spot for pre or post dinner copas.
At this point I should probably add that I am lucky enough to have visited Mexico not once, but twice. But both tequila and mezcal drinking (in my experience) are almost national sports. Agabar has carved out a little slice of Mexico in the heart of Palma. The amount of tequila and mezcal on offer is staggering, and has enabled them to find their niche in a crowded marketplace. The bar itself is sleek and sophisticated, no sign of dodgy sombreros or sad looking nachos. Instead the cocktails are thoughtfully created and expertly crafted. It’s worth mentioning that Agabar isn’t just all about liquid refreshments. There’s some light bites on offer too. My full-blown love affair with decent Mexican food started in Mexico City three years ago and upon my return, I’ve spent time, money and energy on dinners where I’ve wound up bitterly disappointed when I’ve been served up a plate of a beige-looking stodge. But Agabar keeps their snack selection simple, and their curried almonds are the ideal pairing for a paloma; my most recent addiction.
There’s classic cocktails on offer, should you not be in the mood for mezcal. In my youth (to be said in granny-esque tones) I had many love affairs, with many different tipples. You name it; I’d tried it (and more than likely I would have had the hangover to show for it). Malibu and Pineapple, Archers and Lemonade, Amaretto and Coke followed by a brief dalliance with Vodka and Cranberry. They’d all been enjoyed (or endured) until I finally met my drink soulmate; the G&T. Again, Agabar has plenty of gins on offer, including my personal favourite from the north of Spain, Nordes. However, we were very kindly offered a chupito of mezcal from the owner and I have to say, it might just be winning me over.
Agabar seemed to offer something for everyone. Cocktails for those looking for some for weekend (or even weekday) glamour. As well as simple cañas for those who like their thirst quenchers to be a little more traditional. Don’t make my mistake of walking on by. Stick your head in and give it a try (apologies for the terrible rhyme, clearly there’s a frustrated poet in me itching to get out).
