Palma Aquarium

Dive into Mallorca’s underwater wonderland

Where can you explore the depths of the ocean without leaving Palma? For over 15 years, Palma Aquarium has been offering the island a spellbinding glimpse into a wondrous underwater world, and a rare chance to see marine life in all its dazzling. weird, and occasionally terrifying glory. Read on and immerse yourself in the marvels of the deep – without getting your feet wet.

Corals, Sharks, and… Science

Let’s start with some bragging rights: Palma Aquarium houses the largest collection of live coral in Europe. But if staring at slow-growing marine life isn’t your idea of a thrill, don’t worry – there are plenty of livelier, toothier, and significantly more menacing residents to meet.

Launched in 2007, the aquarium is part of Coral World International, a heavyweight in the marine science world. These are the same folks behind aquariums in Hawaii and (soon) Berlin. Yes, Berlin. A city famous for its club scene, but not exactly its oceanfront views.

Beyond being a tourist magnet, Palma Aquarium, via its Foundation, is all about ocean conservation and research. They educate the public, protect endangered species, and run conservation projects – all while keeping the lights and filters on with ticket sales.

The Foundation’s work ranges from marine rescue missions to breeding programs, all backed by cutting-edge science. A team of passionate volunteers helps keep it all running – because saving the ocean is a full-time job.

Meet the Locals: The Stars of Palma Aquarium

Mediterranean Marine Life

The Mediterranean Sea is no easy place to live. With slow water renewal and rising pollution levels, marine species here have evolved to adapt and endure. Despite accounting for just 0.8% of the world’s oceans, the Med is home to 7% of all known marine species, with nearly a third of them found nowhere else on Earth.

– Triggerfish: Imagine a fish that permanently looks like it’s struggling through a Monday morning algebra class. Or maybe he’s just thinking about lunch. That’s the triggerfish. Its strong jaw and eerily human-like teeth are designed for crunching mollusks – but don’t worry, it won’t be biting your ankles.

– Mediterranean Tube Anemone: If you’ve ever wondered what would happen if an alien and a sea creature had a baby, this is it. Part flower, part coral, and 100% bizarre, this otherworldly organism looks like something straight out of a sci-fi movie.

– Dusky Grouper: A fish whose name alone sounds like it should be the frontman of a blues band.

Tropical Paradise: Where Color Runs Wild

If the Mediterranean is a test of survival, the tropical waters of the vast Atlantic, Pacific and Indian Oceans are an underwater carnival. Coral reefs here explode with color, looking like an aquatic version of New York Fashion Week. Every creature has a unique role in maintaining the delicate ecosystem, from tiny cleaner fish to massive predators.

– Napoleon Fish: Named for the hump on its forehead that resembles Napoleon Bonaparte’s hat, this fish actually beats the French general in one department – it can grow up to two meters long.

– Mandarinfish: A psychedelic trip in fish form. With up to six electric colors on their tiny bodies, these guys make even the wildest tropical birds look underdressed.

– Clownfish: Thanks to Finding Nemo, these little guys are basically celebrities. But beyond their Hollywood fame, they have a fascinating symbiotic relationship with anemones – hanging out in their stinging tentacles without a care in the world.

Beyond the Aquarium: Jungle, Gardens, and Hands-On Encounters

Not everything here is underwater. Palma

Aquarium also boasts:

– Mediterranean Gardens, where you can meet carp, rays, and sea turtles – and yes, you can even touch the carp. (They’re surprisingly chill about it.)

The Jungle Section is home to some of the most bizarre reptiles around, like the Soft-Shell Turtle and the Alligator Snapping Turtle – two creatures that look like they escaped from a dinosaur documentary.

– If you’re lucky, you might even spot an adorable axolotl.
