In early 2024, Nina Sophie Moons, an Austrian native who had lived abroad for more than 15 years, launched The Calendar Mallorca — a platform dedicated to showcasing the best events, local businesses, and cultural activities on the island. Nina’s journey to Mallorca began in 2020 when she moved here with her family. Having lived in Southeast Asia and Peru, Mallorca provided a perfect base — close to family, but still offering a relaxed, island lifestyle. “Every weekend feels like a little holiday here,” she reflects. But there was just one problem. “I was always frustrated because I kept missing out on events. I’d find out too late or on the same day when I already had plans,” Nina recalls. This frustration led her to create a solution not only for herself but for locals and tourists alike. “I have two small kids, and it’s great to have plans for the weekend, especially since events here are so kid-friendly,” she adds.
The idea of The Calendar Mallorca was born from this need for organization and connection, allowing both locals and tourists to find out what’s on in a more accessible way. The platform quickly gained traction, becoming a go-to resource for discovering everything from traditional festivals to modern art exhibitions.
Building a Unique Platform for Mallorca
What makes The Calendar Mallorca unique is Nina’s careful curation of events. She selects them based on personal interest, ensuring a level of quality and engagement. “The number one criterion is: would I want to go there? If I think it’s interesting, I’ll include it,” she explains. Nina also emphasizes the importance of speaking directly to event organizers, ensuring that the events have substance beyond just a well-designed flyer.
The platform caters to tourists, expatriates, and locals alike. “It’s for everyone. We’ve even had Mallorcans telling us they’re grateful because now they know what’s going on around the island,” Nina says with a smile.
Overcoming Challenges and Staying Motivated
Running a startup is never easy, and Nina’s experience is no different. “There are hard days when I wonder why I’m doing all this, but then someone will send a message saying, ‘Thank you for what you’ve created; it’s made my weekends so much better,’” Nina says. These small moments of appreciation keep her motivated.
Another of the platform’s strengths is its inclusivity. Nina is committed to highlighting the diverse experiences Mallorca has to offer. “It could be a small pueblo here in Mallorca or something more modern, like a wine event—it can be anything, really.”
Looking to the Future
Since its launch in June 2022, The Calendar Mallorca has seen impressive growth. “We’ve had over 70,000 visits to the website, and our Instagram now has over 11,000 followers,” Nina reveals.
Looking ahead, Nina hopes to expand the platform’s reach even further. “I want The Calendar Mallorca to be the number-one place people think of when they want to find out what’s happening on the island,” she says.
As The Calendar Mallorca continues to grow, Nina remains focused on connecting people with the heart of the island. “Mallorca is such a special place. There’s always something happening—you just have to know where to look.”
