All my lives have led me to be a Human of Mallorca. From copy writing for the Times Newspaper, to Hotel Management with the Swiss Cottage Hotel in London, to opening and selling, a start-up recruitment business. All these experiences, unbeknown to me were preparing me for Mallorca.
A three generational relocation, as my business sale combined with ill health early retirement for my husband. The family were ready to start a permanent adventure to the island they knew. This came after summers in the small holiday apartment on the beach in the Northwest corner.
What to do, where to go, what was the vibe? These were my early day questions as I made sense of relocation. Events were happening which I learnt about after they had gone. This was the catalyst for me, and I knew communication was my future on this island. Soller Shirley Facebook and sollerweb grew out of the era and is still growing.
Then the stories, always the stories. The writing gene had never left me, and I used it in all careers and interests I have pursued. As a great admirer of the work of Humans of New York I knew that Humans of Mallorca would have super interesting tales to tell. The most fascinating people rock up in Mallorca to live, stay for a season, or visit.
The relocators arrive with their lives already set. Their past belongs to another country and another time. What they contribute to Mallorca is an amalgam of experiences and money made. From the ultra-rich to those scraping a living, they are all here.
As a writer, hotel manager and small business owner I found compatibility with people all over the island. Most of them, like me, are not one dimensional. We all have stories to tell and mine has begun like this.
