Pianist from USA Richard Vinton drifted into Mallorca with ‘The Drifters’

‘We were all part of the recruitment drive for American entertainers for the Dinner and Show venue of Son Amar in its early days. I am talking over thirty-five years ago now and I am still entertaining. Thousands have heard me play in Son Amar and other venues on the island.

I hold a Diploma in Music from the New England Conservatory (Boston, 1982), a Master of Music from the University of Miami (1990) and a Higher Degree in Jazz Piano from the Conservatory of Music of the Balearic Islands (2019). In the USA I have worked with many of the greats including Tony Bennett and The Mavericks. I just want to expand my skill set the whole time. I still study Jazz Piano at the Conservatory in Palma. Although I play music for a living there are still many sounds and genres I want to perfect.

My work with the Islands musical festivals gives me a great time when I can play alone. I can choose the music I want, which is influencing me right now. Noone has told me what to play and I choose music precious to me and experiment with different styles. I am influenced by my heroes of the past, Bill Evans, Oscar Peterson, Dike Ellington, Ray Charles, among others.

I play with many musical friends in Mallorca, and we have a good sound going. I live on the Island as a working musician and music teacher. I didn’t realize when I signed up for a season at Son Amar I would stay forever. That’s what this place does to people, and I wouldn’t be anywhere else. I am a delighted ‘Human of Mallorca’.
