Pedro’s bar: where fries transcend snack status and become a meal

Smack in the heart of Santa Catalina’s vibrant market district, Pedro’s Bar (Carrer d’Annibal, 15a) stands out for one particular reason—fries that are anything but ordinary. These aren’t your average tourist trap potatoes. Infused with fresh black truffle and served with homemade mayonnaise, Pedro’s fries are a golden, crispy masterpiece that could easily outshine any full meal. When all the nearby restaurants are closed for siesta or simply taking the day off, Pedro’s remains ready to satisfy your cravings with this simple yet irresistible offering.

Pros:

 – convenient hours, and it seems like this place is always ready to feed you, even when all the nearby restaurants are on a break or taking another day off;

– “Patatas fritas con trufa” (French fries with mayonnaise and fresh black truffle, 13 euro) – a golden heap of thin, crispy, hot slices of freshly cut potatoes, not made from frozen pre-cut ones like they often serve at tourist spots;

 – the mayonnaise is homemade, not store-bought, with all the qualities of a well-whipped, smooth emulsion. There’s just the right amount of mayonnaise on the plate with the fries – not too much, not too little;

 – no one in the world has come up with a more satisfying and simple combination than fries with mayonnaise, especially when the dish is lovingly prepared with quality ingredients;

 – the fried potatoes are richly infused with the scent of truffle, and the thin, firm slices of this delicavy make the dish irresistibly addictive (this is exactly how truly fresh truffle behaves, and in this case, you understand what you’re paying 13 euros for);

 – the “Ensalada de atún y tomate” (10.5 euros) is made with high-quality canned tuna. The rings of thinly sliced white onion are crunchy and add a nice touch of rustic charm to the salad;

 – both the salad and fries portions are large enough to share between two people;

 – the small outdoor tables are carefully set, and the thick napkins are folded into neat little boats – all very charming;

 – the friendly, quick, and precise service never suffers from forgetfulness.

 Cons:

 – the tiny Pedro’s is located just a stone’s throw from the Santa Catalina market, in an area where it seems like everyone eats and drinks 24/7. Still, it’s not always easy to find truly tasty food here;

 – the “Ensalada de atún y tomate” would be wonderful if the juicy, ripe tomatoes hadn’t been kept in the fridge before landing on your plate. It’s a real shame, as those tomatoes lost 70 percent of their flavor and aroma;

 – if you start counting the calories in the fries, you’ll likely lose your appetite;

 – after the tuna and onion salad, kissing is strongly discouraged.
