Jari Miettinen is the skipper of a fine yacht, whose heart is fixed in Mallorca

‘I came to Mallorca for a holiday, fell in love and now I live here. I am part of the yachtie community and the skipper of a fine yacht. My life is a mixture of the sea, South of France, and Mallorca. Where the boat goes, I go, but my home and heart are firmly fixed in Mallorca. My family, friends and the dog are always waiting for me when I return.

My hobby is photography, and I could spend all my time taking pictures because it is so beautiful here. My real life is spent on fine yachts, and I am the skipper of my fifth boat in Mallorca. I have been here since 2003.

I was born in Kemi in Finland, and I spent four years at the sea school learning how to be Merchant Seaman. My family moved to Haparanda in Sweden which I now consider to be my other home next to Mallorca.

I left home and my family and went to sea at 16 years old. I wanted to be a sailor so I could see the world. In my early training I travelled European and Scandinavian waters. I hated learning English at school but now I am so glad I did — the language opened so many doors for me.

Oil tankers to super yachts has been my story and I have achieved most of my travel ambitions. I spend time each year in Lapland hiking in the snow with my family and the many reindeer. I am always happy to be back in Mallorca — it is a small island which works for me in every way.’
