For Denis Pérez, being an electrician is much more than a job; it’s a craft, a challenge, and a source of personal pride. Born to a German mother and an Andalusian father, Denis grew up here in Mallorca. His journey into electrical engineering wasn’t meticulously planned but shaped by circumstances and a bit of luck.
A Practical Start
Denis’s fascination with mechanics and electricity began early, but becoming an electrician wasn’t his first choice. “When it was time to choose my studies, I wanted to pursue mechanics. However, I couldn’t afford this option, so I decided on electricity instead,” he recalls. Over time, this practical decision turned into a passion. “I’ve grown to love it, and now I can’t imagine doing anything else. Solving complex problems and feeling accomplished at the end of the day is incredibly satisfying.”
Problem Solving: The Heart of the Job
Denis thrives on challenges. “When clients call me after another electrician couldn’t fix an issue, and I manage to solve it, that’s the most rewarding part of my work,” he shares. For him, routine tasks are predictable, but tricky problems spark his enthusiasm.
Effective communication with clients is also a key part of his success. “Explaining technical details to clients can be tricky, especially if they don’t have a technical background. I take my time to make it clear, and they usually appreciate the effort,” Denis explains.
A Day in the Life
A typical day for Denis starts early. “I wake up at six, help my wife with the kids, and then head to work. My day includes organizing materials, coordinating with clients, and tackling jobs of varying complexity,” he says. Evenings are spent reflecting on the day’s achievements. “If the day went well, I feel satisfied and accomplished. But if things don’t go as planned, it weighs on me until the next day.”
Advice for Aspiring Electricians
Denis is keen to inspire the next generation of electricians. “You need to enjoy what you do and be ready to keep learning. Electricity is always evolving with new technologies and systems, so you must stay up-to-date,” he advises.
For homeowners looking to hire an electrician, Denis recommends prioritizing their track record and reviewing previous work. “A professional portfolio or examples of completed projects build trust and ensure you’re hiring someone capable,” he says.
Living and Working in Mallorca
Mallorca offers a unique lifestyle, but it comes with its share of challenges, particularly for those trying to establish themselves financially. “Life here has become expensive, especially if you have a family or want to buy a house,” Denis notes. However, he emphasizes that opportunities do exist for those willing to work hard and think strategically. “If you can learn a trade, start a small business, or create something sustainable, you can make a decent living,” he advises. For Denis, the key lies in finding a skill you’re passionate about and building a livelihood around it, despite the challenges.
A Bright Future
Denis sees a promising future for his profession, especially with advances in automation and electronics. “Automation is what excites me the most. It’s a field with endless opportunities for those who are skilled and committed,” he says.
His advice for those considering the trade is simple yet profound: “Find a craft you love and learn to live from it. There’s nothing more fulfilling than that.”
As Denis continues to excel in his field, his journey serves as a reminder that passion and dedication can transform any career into a rewarding pursuit. Mallorca is not just his home but the foundation of his professional and personal growth. And while Denis’s work involves bringing light to others, his passion and commitment are what truly illuminate his path.
